Whitehawk Play and Adventure Project - Brighton

Recreational opportunities outside school hours for young people in Whitehawk

The Project

The project seeks to improve facilities for children and teenagers in the Whitehawk area, bringing together parents, schools and local community groups. It is massively popular and has been running for eleven years. The scheme represents the fruits of a very successful partnership between the project, local parents, Brighton and Hove Youth Service, Sussex Police and Neighbourhood Watch and has been identified by Brighton Borough Council as part of its Community Safety Strategy. It has also won two national awards for its work.

About Whitehawk

Whitehawk is a large public housing estate on the edge of Brighton. It is relatively newly built, but unemployment and crime is high and there are large numbers of children with nothing to do when they're out of school.

Activities

Staff at the project provide support for many different activities, including a very successful junior athletics club and holiday playschemes.
They are also responsible for organising a large summer play and activity scheme known as WHATS TO DO. This is the largest youth diversionary scheme in the county, providing four weeks of exciting and adventurous activities every August such as

...all at a cost that local young people can afford
